“The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada has challenged all Canadians with its Calls to Action to help address the legacy of Canada’s residential school system and advance the goal of reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. The Government has committed to address each of the Calls to Action that fall under its purview. The proposed measures in Budget 2017 will build on the progress made to date and directly respond to the Calls for Action through:
• Substantial investments in First Nations and Inuit health care.
• Support for post-secondary education, skills, training and
employment development.
• Increased funding to support the preservation and revitalization of
Indigenous languages.
• Programing to reduce the overrepresentation of Indigenous
Peoples in the criminal justice system and corrections. In addition, the Prime Minister announced in December 2016 that the Government will enact an Indigenous Languages Act, co-developed with Indigenous Peoples, with the goal of ensuring the preservation, protection and revitalization of Indigenous languages.”
